Jane Austen is known as the beloved author of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and other witty and romantic novels. What is less known is that Jane was a deeply religious person who was devoted to God.
Jane wrote beautiful, heartfelt prayers to read with her family. As a child, she and Cassandra would often kneel at their bedside to recite their prayers. Later in life, Jane would read prayers in the morning when she rose, and in the evenings before bed.
Jane’s grandfather, father and brothers, as well as various cousins were all Clergymen, and it was a profession she knew well and admired and wrote about in her novels. She was devoted to God, and went to church often, no matter where she was living or whom she was visiting. It was simply part of her daily life.
Jane Austen’s original prayers are cared for by Mills College in Oakland, California, and for the first time you can read Jane’s original prayers in her neat handwriting that she wrote over 200 years ago.
Written on the outside of the sheets is “Prayers Composed by my ever dear Sister Jane” and you can read about their authenticity and history in the book.
