Jane loved snowdrops and would have passed them on the way to her brother’s house. Seen as a symbol of hope, snowdrops signal that spring is just around the corner and the dark, cold days of winter are soon to disappear. Jane was an expert in stitching and sewed neatly, as commented by her brothers, She made shirts and shawls, and embroidered small purses for her nieces. This exhibition showcases the Royal School of Needlework graduate Emily Barnett, who took inspiration from the Chawton House collection. These pieces paint a picture of the ways in which needlework and knitting to watercolour, provided occupation, solace, community and skill to women from the eighteenth century to today.

The parade is a fundraiser for the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation, founded by Caroline Jane Knight (the last of Jane’s nieces to grow up at Chawton House and Patron of Jane Austen Regency Week), and retraces Jane’s steps from her cottage in the middle of the village to Chawton ‘Great House’, as Jane called it, to the family library.

Curator’s tour of Chawton in Stitches, the summer exhibition at Chawton House showcasing the work of award-winning graduate of the Royal School of Needlework Emily Barnett, whose project takes inspiration from the gardens and collection at Chawton House. Her unique pieces are displayed alongside historic decorative arts pieces from the collection, printed advice on ‘feminine accomplishments’, and manuscript and scrap books compiled by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century women.

Wyards was the home of Jane Austen’s niece Anna, the daughter of Jane’s eldest brother James by his first wife. Anna and her aunt Jane were extremely close and Jane often took the donkey and cart to Wyards to visit her. When Anna was left motherless at two years old, she was sent to Steventon Rectory to spend time with grandma and her aunts Cassandra and Jane, then twenty-one and nineteen. The current owner William Monk is a distant relation of the Lefroy family. Timed cream teas throughout the afternoon.
