Based in the former Gateway of the medieval Reading Abbey, Reading Ladies Boarding School became home to Jane, her elder sister Cassandra and cousin Jane between the summer of 1785 and December 1786. As part of the 250 Anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, her former school room in Reading’s Abbey Quarter, often cited as the inspiration for Austen’s Mr Goddard’s School in Emma, will open for a series of special events and tours.

A special opportunity to view the original manuscript of Jane Austen’s poem, in her hand, about the death of her close friend, Mrs Anne Lefroy. Alongside Jane copied out pages of the obituary from the newspaper for Anne’s death. Anne was a mentor to Jane, encouraging her writing and sharing her extensive library before her untimely death following a riding accident on Jane’s birthday in 1804.
